Chapter 15

Saturday 24th July 7.15 p.m.

Ellie looked at Adrian in horror.

‘No,’ she said. ‘No way is Tyler the vigilante.’

Adrian raked his fingers through his brown hair. ‘Look, it was definitely him on camera. I’ve seen him wearing the same hoodie, the one with the skull on the back.’

Ellie’s stomach turned as she imagined Tyler sneaking out in the dead of night, heading through the forest all alone with this prank in mind.

‘I’d like to speak to him after his performance,’ he said, looking towards the stage through the open door. ‘I probably ought to do it officially, but I thought it might be better to do it casually? Just get a sense of what he’s up to?’

‘I know my son,’ Ellie said vehemently. ‘He would not do this.’

‘We all think we know our kids, Ellie, but you said it yourself, boys this age are mysterious creatures. You can’t blame me for wondering. Tyler’s a clever kid, he knows his way around a computer. Plus . . .’

He hesitated.

‘Plus what?’ Ellie pushed.

‘He’s been through a lot lately.’

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ Ellie said, crossing her arms, feeling her heart beat rapidly against her wrists. ‘You’re referring to me and Peter breaking up, right? Well, Carter’s been through it too. What if it’s him? We all know what he’s like.’

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

Ellie realised she’d taken it too far. She closed her eyes, pinching the bridge of her nose.

‘I’d better head back inside,’ Adrian said. ‘But I’ll find Tyler after, okay?’ He looked into her eyes, his own full of emotion. Then he walked away.

Ellie stayed outside for a few moments, taking deep, low breaths. It felt like she was spiralling, losing a grip on the ties of her life which she’d so carefully put back together lately.

No. She couldn’t let herself spiral. She needed to find Tyler before Adrian did!

Ellie darted back inside and walked through the crowds, dashing to the area behind the stage where she knew Tyler would be. She found him with the two other band members – Aaron and Elvin, their drummer.

Tyler’s face was lit up with energy and excitement, his eyes sparkling. Ellie felt like crying. He was so buzzed about his gig and now she was about to burst that bubble of happiness. But she needed to talk to him before Adrian did!

Tyler caught Ellie watching him from the door. ‘Have you seen how busy it is out there, Mum?’ he said, caught up in the wonder of it. ‘The room is buzzing.’

‘It’s so busy, Tyler. You can tell it’s sold out!’ She peered over at his friends. ‘Look, can we have a quiet chat?’

Tyler frowned. ‘Now? We’re on in twenty minutes, I need to get some stuff sorted.’

‘I won’t be long. It’s important.’

‘But—’

‘Please? A quick chat.’

‘O – okay,’ he said hesitantly. He turned to his friends. ‘Just need to help the old ma with something, be back in a mo.’

Ellie led Tyler out into the hallway to a side room and shut the door.

‘What’s up?’ he asked, crossing his arms as he leaned against the wall.
